FileMaker WebDirect Overview

Run custom apps directly in a web browser

What is it?

FileMaker WebDirect, available in FileMaker Server, is innovative web technology that instantly runs FileMaker apps directly in a web browser — no web programming required.

What does it allow you to do?

FileMaker WebDirect provides your extended users with desktop-style interaction with your FileMaker app through a web browser on as desktop, laptop, mobile tablet, or mobile phone.

Web users don’t need to install additional software—anyone with compatible web browser software and access to the Internet or an intranet can connect to your FileMaker WebDirect app to view, edit, sort, or search records.

How it works

FileMaker WebDirect runs in a web browser and uses these standard web technologies:

Supported browsers include Safari, Chrome, Internet Explorer, and Microsoft Edge on the desktop, and Safari and Chrome on a mobile browser.

Accessing custom apps with FileMaker WebDirect

When you publish apps on the Internet or an intranet, the host computer must be running on FileMaker Cloud or FileMaker Server, and the apps you want to share must be open. User Connections allow clients — including FileMaker Pro, FileMaker Go, and FileMaker WebDirect — to connect to FileMaker Cloud or FileMaker Server. Connections can be purchased through Admin Console or on the FileMaker Licensing for Teams section of the FileMaker Store.

Follow these steps to make your app accessible in a web browser:

  1. Create a custom app tuned for a web browser using FileMaker Pro or use one of the 18 web layouts included in the FileMaker Pro Starter Solutions.
  2. Under the FileMaker Pro File menu, enable FileMaker WebDirect access to an app.
  3. Upload the custom app to FileMaker Server.
  4. Access your app from a web browser with User Connections.
